The abbreviation 'GIS' means geographic information system. A GIS involves people and data. When you use a map to plan a trip, you are using GIS. The GIS Department was formed in 1998 to create and maintain the best maps of Hamilton County and to support GIS users throughout the area. GIS is being used in local governments to perform or enhance a number of functions ranging from subdivision review to police response. You can benefit from it directly by using this site. If you are a citizen of the County, then you also benefit through the provision of better and more efficient governmental services.

The Hamilton County GIS Department was formed in November 1998 as an offshoot of the Engineering Department.  Unlike many other County agencies, the GIS Department provides services to public- and private-sector users of GIS data and software.
